Artist's Statement
"Contrast is the most important issue in my approach to painting. The play of light and shadow, which is the fundamental component of dramatic lighting, is by far the most important area. Secondly, I am interested in the interaction of realism and abstraction. While I am a realistic painter, I also prefer to incorporate abstraction. This leaves portions of the work for the viewers to decipher and identify for themselves. I believe it is important to engage the viewer in this way-- to lead them on a journey through the painting. The third distinctive element of contrast is in the application of paint (i.e. light washes vs. heavy impasto areas). With regard to this, I prefer to let the process remain evident at the finish; I do not refine all of the strokes to make them disappear. From a distance, a painting will read one way regardless of technique. When the viewer gets close to the work, however, there is an opportunity for a second experience. This is where the calligraphy and virtuosity of paint strokes may be featured.

Beyond this, I strive to make my paintings elicit an emotional response. In my preparation and planning of a work, my first prioity is to establish my own strong feeling about my subject. Then, throughout the process of painting, I strive to retain this emotional focus. If I have done this successfully, then it may translate to the viewer as well. To me, painting is all about feeling and communicating unique artistic vision."
